Fed up with mounting heaps of rubbish on your street? Lagos State just hit the emergency button.
Hey Lagos fam, here’s what’s going on with all that refuse piling up around town — and what the government says they’re doing about it, according to cbinews.tv.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered an immediate, full-scale waste evacuation across Lagos after residents raised serious concerns about refuse building up in several areas.
In a statement on Thursday from his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gbenga Akosile, the state government admitted they’ve heard the complaints loud and clear. The message? They’re on it, and it’s getting top-level attention.
So, what’s the plan?
All the key players — Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, LAWMA, LASEPA, plus private service providers — have been mobilised to work round the clock. More trucks, more hands, more hours to clear the backlogs and get sanitation back on track.
The government wasn’t shy about the numbers either. Lagos churns out about 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, making it one of the biggest waste-producing cities in Africa. That’s a lot of rubbish to manage.
“Lagosians deserve a clean, healthy and environmentally sustainable city, and this administration remains fully committed to delivering on that obligation,” the statement read.
Akosile stressed that extra resources are being deployed and that “strategic interventions” are underway to boost efficiency in waste collection and disposal. They’re calling the situation temporary, saying real progress has already been made in some spots — and more clean-ups should be visible across the state in the coming days.
But they need your help too.
The state is urging residents, market associations, businesses and community leaders to play their part: bin your waste properly and stop blocking drainage channels, roads and designated collection points.
Bottom line: The government says it’s committed to keeping environmental standards high and protecting public health — but they’re asking everyone to keep Lagos clean together.
