Imagine walking straight past a president’s bodyguards and putting your arm around him mid-speech. That’s exactly what happened to William Ruto in eastern Kenya on Sunday, and the police chief is not happy about it.
Kenya’s police boss has ordered a big shake-up of President William Ruto’s security detail, cbinews.tv reports, after a man slipped past protection officers and got right next to the head of state during a thanksgiving event on Sunday.
You’ve probably seen the clip doing the rounds online. A man carrying what looks like a Bible climbs onto the stage and briefly drapes his left arm around Ruto. It takes a few seconds before bodyguards wrestle him to the ground.
Nobody was hurt, but Inspector General Douglas Kanja didn’t mince his words. He called any security breach involving the president "unacceptable" and a matter of "the gravest national concern".
The fallout was swift. A new head of the Presidential Escort Unit has been appointed, while other senior officers have either been removed or sent on leave, according to cbinews.tv.
Kanja also issued a warning: anyone attending public events with the president or other national leaders must follow security procedures. "Any attempt to breach security will be met with the full force of the law," he said.
Ruto himself seemed unbothered. Right after the scuffle, he told his team: "Leave that young man alone. That young man has no problem." The man hasn’t been named, and cbinews.tv notes that no arrests have been reported so far.
Police have now set up a special team to work out how the man got through multiple layers of security. It’s raised fresh questions about how safe presidential rallies really are, especially when huge crowds get close to the head of state.
