A Russian drone just crossed more than a border — it slammed into a block of flats in Romania, injuring civilians and dragging a NATO member into the Ukraine war’s blast radius.
It wasn’t supposed to happen here. But on Thursday night, a Russian drone crashed into the roof of a 10-storey apartment building in Galati, south-eastern Romania, during Moscow’s overnight assault on neighbouring Ukraine. Two people were injured. Residents were evacuated. And the EU says Russia has “crossed yet another line”.
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen didn’t hold back on Friday. “We stand in full solidarity with Romania and its people,” she posted on X. “As we continue strengthening our security and deterrence, especially on our eastern border, we will keep increasing the pressure on Russia. "Romania's foreign ministry called it a “grave and irresponsible escalation from Russia”.
They’ve already briefed NATO allies and the secretary general, and asked for faster delivery of anti-drone systems. French minister for European Affairs Benjamin Haddad said the incident proves what many in Brussels have been warning about for months — that Russia isn’t just attacking Ukraine, it’s threatening the whole European security architecture. “Russia has not only attacked Ukraine, but also threatened the European security architecture,” Haddad told French radio RMC. “A Russian drone crashed in Romania again last night, posing a threat through its interference. "He also pointed out that French troops are stationed in Romania as part of NATO’s reassurance operations. “Specifically to demonstrate our support for the sovereignty of our partners in Europe,” he added.
This isn’t the first time debris or drones from the war have landed in Romania. But hitting a densely populated residential block in Galati marks a sharp escalation — and a direct test of NATO’s Article 5 red lines. For now, Bucharest is pushing for more anti-drone kit. Brussels is talking pressure. And civilians in a Romanian city are waking up to the reality that the Ukraine war doesn’t stop at the border.
