Russia 'Thwarts Ukrainian Plot to Blow up Senior Military Officer"

One person killed, another detained in Crimea after the plot...

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) reported that they had shot and killed one suspect and arrested a second while thwarting a Ukrainian plot to blow up a senior military officer in Crimea.

Footage published on Monday showed the body on the ground, as well as a grenade and an apparent explosive device under a car.

The date and location of the footage published by the Russian FSB cannot be independently verified.

An FSB officer explained what they had found: "Upon the GUR’s (Ukrainian Defence Ministry’s Main Intelligence Directorate) orders, a Ukrainian citizen recruited by the special services was to blow up the Russian officer in his private car using an explosive device given to him. The perpetrator was neutralised while planting explosives under the car and offering armed resistance."

"Communication devices used to contact his handler, as well as Western-made explosive device components were seized," he added.

The FSB claim it was masterminded by GUR officer, Rustem Said Khalilovich Fakhriev, with a Crimean resident also now in custody.

The Ukrainian side had not commented on the incident at the time of publication. It comes following other foiled plots, including an alleged British-Ukrainian attempt to steal a Russian fighter jet and Kinzhal missile - and another to kill a 'top Russian official' at a cemetery in Moscow.
