Moscow says Lithuania will be in its nuclear crosshairs if it goes ahead with plans to host allied nuclear weapons.

Things just got a whole lot tenser in the Baltics.

Russia has warned it will point its own nuclear warheads directly at Lithuania if the country goes through with plans to host nuclear weapons belonging to its NATO allies.

The warning came on Friday from Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who told state TV it would be “a very serious turn in terms of escalating tensions”.

His message was pretty blunt: “If there are nuclear weapons on the territory that are aimed at us, accordingly, the territory of that country will fall into the crosshairs of our own nuclear weapons.”

So why is Lithuania even considering this?

The small Baltic state is moving to lift its long-standing constitutional ban on storing nuclear weapons on its soil. It’s part of a wider push to beef up its security while Russia’s war in Ukraine rumbles on.

The proposal is currently making its way through parliament, where it needs a two-thirds majority to pass. It already has backing from President Gitanas Nauseda and the major parties, and could come into force as early as this winter.

President Nauseda, who announced the plan back in July, said Lithuania wants to be an “integral part of this nuclear deterrence”.
