Just hours after a fragile three-day truce expired, Russia and Ukraine exchanged fresh attacks, reigniting fears of further escalation in the ongoing war.
Russia resumed drone and missile strikes on Ukraine on Tuesday following the expiration of a three-day ceasefire, with Ukrainian officials confirming fresh attacks on Kyiv and the death of one person in the Dnipropetrovsk region.
According to Ukrainian authorities, air raid sirens sounded across the capital as drones were detected over Kyiv shortly after the truce ended. Residents were urged to remain in shelters while air defence systems responded to the threat.
Regional officials in eastern Ukraine said Russian strikes killed one man and injured at least four others in the Synelnykove district of Dnipropetrovsk.
Meanwhile, Russia’s defence ministry claimed its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 27 Ukrainian drones over the Belgorod, Voronezh, and Rostov regions.
CBI News reports that the ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump ahead of Russia’s World War II Victory Day celebrations, had raised hopes for renewed peace negotiations. However, both Moscow and Kyiv accused each other of violating the truce even before it officially expired.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that fighting never truly stopped, accusing Russia of lacking genuine interest in ending the war that began with President Vladimir Putin’s invasion in February 2022.
Zelensky also noted that growing tensions involving Iran are shifting global attention away from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, further complicating diplomatic efforts.
