Ukraine has accused Russia of escalating the war after Moscow unleashed one of its largest overnight attacks yet, firing hundreds of drones and missiles — including the feared Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile.
Russia has launched one of its biggest attacks on Kyiv since the war began, using the powerful Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile in a massive overnight bombardment, according to Ukrainian officials.
As reported by cbinews.tv, at least four people were killed while dozens more were injured after Russia fired about 600 drones and 90 missiles across Ukraine overnight. Ukrainian authorities say Kyiv was the main target of the assault.
The Oreshnik missile, classified by the United States as an intermediate-range ballistic missile capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads, is said to be extremely difficult to intercept because of its speed and flight path. This marks only the third known time Russia has deployed the weapon.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the missile landed near Bila Tserkva in central Ukraine, condemning the attack and insisting Russia must face consequences.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha claimed the missile carried a dummy warhead, while European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the strike as a dangerous act of “nuclear brinkmanship”.
World leaders have also reacted strongly. French President Emmanuel Macron called the attack a serious escalation in Russia’s aggression, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz labelled the use of the Oreshnik missile “reckless”.
Ukraine’s emergency services say at least 87 people were wounded in Kyiv, including three children. Although Ukrainian air defences reportedly intercepted hundreds of incoming weapons, several ballistic missiles still struck the capital.
The latest bombardment comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly ordered retaliation following a deadly Ukrainian strike in Russian-occupied territory.
