Rooney says Manchester City hold psychological edge over Arsenal in Premier League title race...
Former England captain Wayne Rooney believes Manchester City hold a psychological advantage over Arsenal in the Premier League title race ahead of Sunday’s crucial clash at the Etihad Stadium.
CBI News reports that Arsenal, who sit six points clear having played a game more, face City in what Rooney described as a potential “title decider”.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney said City’s experience under pressure gives them the edge.
“I think City will have the edge on that, just purely the manager and players they've got. They will be able to stay a little calmer than the Arsenal players,” he said.
“They know how to win the title and have a manager who knows how to do it.”
He added that recent form swings could impact Arsenal’s mentality, pointing to their defeat to AFC Bournemouth and City’s 3-0 win over Chelsea.
“When you go on a run and lose a few games, you start thinking ‘where's the next goal, the next win going to come from?’ That negative mindset really has an impact on your performance,” Rooney said.
Rooney added that the outcome of Sunday’s match could shape the title race, suggesting a draw would still be useful for Arsenal.
“They must be tough to break down, make sure there's no gaps between the lines and try to hit them on the break,” he said.
“They need to be resilient enough to stop City from scoring.”
Meanwhile, Rooney also raised concerns over Tottenham Hotspur’s form, warning that the club could face a serious crisis after slipping into the relegation zone following defeat at Sunderland and West Ham United’s win over Wolves.
He described Spurs’ performance as “a bit flat” in Roberto De Zerbi’s first match in charge, adding that the expected new-manager bounce did not materialise.
“Sometimes you get a bounce but I think you get that when a new manager comes in and you are front-footed and aggressive on the ball. I thought they were a bit in between,” he said.
Rooney warned that continued poor results could have long-term consequences for the club.
“It will be a disaster for them if they do go [down]. If they don't get back in the Premier League in the first year, that will be an absolute nightmare for them,” he said.
Tottenham are yet to win a league game in 2026 and host Brighton & Hove Albion next, with Rooney stressing that ending the winless run is now critical.
