Tottenham captain Romero ruled out for rest of season with knee injury...
Tottenham Hotspur’s battle to avoid relegation has suffered a major setback after captain Cristian Romero was ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
CBI News reports that the 27-year-old defender sustained the injury during Spurs’ 1-0 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, limping off after a collision with goalkeeper Antonín Kinský.
Subsequent medical tests confirmed a high-grade partial tear of his medial cruciate ligament, with recovery expected to take up to eight weeks.
The injury means Romero will miss Tottenham’s final six Premier League games and has also cast doubt over his involvement with the Argentina national football team at this summer’s World Cup.
The setback comes at a crucial time for newly appointed head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who is fighting to keep Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
Spurs currently sit 18th on the table, two points behind safety.
Meanwhile, the club is already looking ahead to defensive reinforcements, with advanced talks underway to sign Andy Robertson on a free transfer following his decision to leave Liverpool FC at the end of the season.
The Scotland captain is expected to depart Anfield after nine years, with Tottenham reviving their long-standing interest after a failed move in January.
However, any potential deal is likely to depend on Spurs securing Premier League survival.
