Benin Republic coach Gernot Rohr expressed disappointment after his team’s defeat to the Super Eagles in the 2026 World Cup qualifier.
Head coach of the Benin Republic national team, Gernot Rohr, has expressed deep disappointment following his side’s crushing 4-0 defeat to the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their final Group C fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
CBI News reports that the match, played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday, saw Benin’s hopes of qualifying for their first-ever World Cup come to a painful end.
Speaking during the post-match press conference, Rohr, a former Super Eagles coach, admitted the result was a major setback for the Cheetahs, whose World Cup aspirations were dashed by the loss.
“We’re disappointed because our dream was to play at the World Cup,” Rohr said. “Big disappointment, that is my initial reaction.
However, we have a young team and we will continue to build.”
The defeat also allowed South Africa to top Group C and secure automatic qualification for the 2026 tournament. Nigeria finished second and advanced to the playoff stage of the qualifiers.
Despite the heavy loss, Rohr remained optimistic about the future of his youthful Benin squad, emphasizing that the team would use the experience to grow and improve in future competitions.
