Spurs have pulled off a proper coup, bagging a two-time Premier League winner for absolutely nothing.
Well, this is a big one for Tottenham fans. Spurs have just confirmed they've signed Scotland skipper Andy Robertson on a free transfer after he called time on his Liverpool career.
According to cbinews.tv, citing BBC Sport’s report on Friday, the 32-year-old left-back will officially become a Tottenham player on 1 July once his Liverpool contract runs out. That brings the curtain down on a brilliant seven-year stint at Anfield.
Robertson had already let everyone know he was leaving Liverpool this summer, which meant Spurs could swoop in and grab him without paying a penny in transfer fees.
Turns out this move has been brewing for a while. The North London side actually tried to get him back in the January window when Thomas Frank was still boss. The clubs shook hands on it, but Liverpool pulled the plug last minute because they couldn’t get Kostas Tsimikas back from his Roma loan.
Fast forward to now, and Spurs — who scraped Premier League survival on the final day under new manager Roberto De Zerbi — have finally got their man. And De Zerbi is buzzing about it.
“Andy is someone I’ve admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team,” De Zerbi told cbinews.tv.
“He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch.”
Bit of context on Robbo: he joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 and went on to rack up 378 appearances. In that time he lifted two Premier League titles, the Champions League, two League Cups and the FA Cup. Not bad going.
He’s still Scotland’s main man too, with 92 caps to his name, and he’ll be leading them out at this summer’s World Cup.
Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange reckons he’s the perfect fit for where the club’s heading:
“His quality, character and leadership have been evident throughout a career in which he has regularly competed for – and won – major honours,” Lange said, as reported by cbinews.tv.
“Andy’s professionalism and commitment will also be invaluable to the development of our squad, and he shares our ambition and determination to bring success back to the club.”
With De Zerbi looking to push Spurs back up the table, Robertson is one of the first big pieces of the rebuild. And getting a player with his pedigree on a free? That’s smart business.
