The suspension comes after a public outcry by Rivers residents.
The Rivers State Government has suspended its mandatory monthly sanitation exercise.
Chairman of the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA), Dr. Samuel Nwanosike, disclosed this to newsmen on Friday.
The suspension follows widespread public outcry over the policy.
Speaking at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Nwanosike said the decision was a direct order from Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
According to him, the state government is scrapping the compulsory clean-up in favor of what it calls a “more sustainable approach.”
He added that the government will also take steps to tackle challenges such as the blockage of drains.
Nwanosike further noted that the governor has pledged full logistical support to the agency, including the provision of new dumpsites to enhance daily operations.
With the monthly exercise now suspended, the Managing Director of RIWAMA, Dr. Ibimila Wokoma, issued a clear message to the public.
CBI News reports that the Rivers State Government has promised to introduce a new, more sustainable model, while urging residents to play their part in keeping the state clean.
