Out with the old, in with the new — Rivers NSCDC just got a fresh face at the top, and he’s not here to play.
Rivers State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has a new boss. Commandant Reuben Dennis has officially taken over the reins from Joachin Okafor, who bowed out on Tuesday, cbinews.tv reports.
The handover happened at the Command’s headquarters along Olu Obasanjo Road in Port Harcourt, and it was short but significant. According to a statement released Wednesday morning by Rivers NSCDC spokesperson Ihemnacho Umeado, Okafor symbolically handed the seal of authority to Dennis.
If the name Reuben Lessor Dennis rings a bell, it should. He was the immediate past 2i/c of the Rivers Command and most recently served as HOD Operations, Zone 9, also in Port Harcourt. So, he’s not exactly new to the turf.
In his farewell speech, Okafor didn’t hold back on the thank-yous. He appreciated the Commandant-General, Prof Ahmed Abubakar Audi, for the opportunity to serve. He also gave a big shout-out to Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalaye Fubara, especially for the 10 Hilux patrol vans donated to the Command. Those vans, he said, really boosted their operations.
Before stepping aside, Okafor had one major task for his successor: get the Command a proper permanent site. Fair enough.
Now, Commandant Dennis isn’t wasting time. He’s promised to keep the ball rolling and even step things up. Top of his list? Stronger ties with sister security agencies and closer work with stakeholders to keep oil-rich Rivers safe and secure.
He’s also coming down hard on vandals and economic saboteurs. His warning was blunt — steer clear of Rivers, because his Command will deal decisively with threats to critical national assets and infrastructure.
Training, intelligence gathering, and welfare for officers are also getting priority under his watch. But he’s drawn a clear line too: no room for indiscipline or misconduct. Erring officers, he warned, will face disciplinary action.
Dennis stressed that security is everybody’s business and called on residents to play their part in tackling insecurity across the state. He also thanked President Bola Tinubu and CG Prof. Ahmed Audi for the privilege to serve in his new role.
The event wrapped up with the usuals — signing of handover notes, symbolic transfer of the NSCDC flag, and plenty of photo sessions.
