The need for drainage clearing comes after flash flood killed two people.
The Rivers State House of Assembly ordered large-scale clearing of canals and drains across Port Harcourt and neighbouring areas following a flash flood that claimed two teenage brothers in the Eligbolo community.
During plenary, lawmakers blamed years of neglected drainage maintenance for the tragedy and backed the motion for urgent cleanup.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, expressed deep sorrow over the losses and directed the Ministries of Environment and Urban Planning to begin immediate clearing of waterways.
In another development, the House commended President Bola Tinubu for granting a presidential pardon to late environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni leaders.
The motion, moved by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Dumle Maol of Gokana Constituency, drew support from members across party lines, who hailed the decision as a vital step towards reconciliation and healing.
CBI News recalls that the nine Ogoni activists were executed in 1995 under the regime of General Sani Abacha after a controversial military trial.
