59 years on, Rivers State is still standing tall — and Governor Siminalayi Fubara says peace, unity and real development are staying front and centre.
According to cbinews.tv, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has doubled down on his administration’s promise to keep peace, unity, security and inclusive development at the heart of everything as the state celebrates its 59th anniversary.
In a goodwill message shared on Wednesday, Fubara praised River's people for their grit. Despite the bumps along the road over the years, he said, they’ve shown resilience, strength and a kind of unity that’s kept the state going since day one.
“Our greatest strength is our brotherhood”
The governor pointed to the tight bond between the state’s ethnic groups — Ijaw, Ikwerre, Ogoni, Etche, Ekpeye, Andoni, Kalabari, and others — calling it a key foundation for peace, stability and progress.
He didn’t mince words about Rivers’ place in Nigeria either. For decades, he noted, the state has been a major economic driver. Yes, oil and gas matter, but it’s the people who’ve really made the difference — from academia and law to business, entertainment, public service and sports.
What’s the plan going forward?
Fubara assured residents that his government will keep pushing policies that protect lives and property, promote peace, and spread development to every corner of the state. The message was clear: governance has to be people-centred, impactful, and fair to all 23 LGAs.
He also took a moment to big up the elders and founding leaders for keeping the spirit of unity alive. To the youths, his charge was simple — stay hopeful, stay responsible, and get stuck in with innovation, hard work and patriotism.
And the women of Rivers? Fubara described them as “indispensable partners” in keeping families, communities and the whole state stable and growing.
A call to look ahead
As Rivers marks 59 years, the governor wants everyone to pause, reflect and recommit. Peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, dialogue and collective progress — that’s the brief. And, in his words, the unity and future of Rivers State must always sit above personal interests and political differences.
For context, Rivers State was created on 27 May 1967, when General Yakubu Gowon’s administration carved 12 states out of Nigeria’s former four regions. Rivers came out of the old Eastern Region.
