The race for the 2027 Rivers governorship election is taking a new twist as Nyesom Wike says no candidate has been chosen yet, insisting that four major parties in the Rainbow Coalition will jointly decide on a single flag-bearer.
According to cbinewstv, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has dismissed claims that any aspirant has already secured the governorship ticket for Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking at a luncheon for coalition candidates in Port Harcourt, Wike revealed that the Rainbow Coalition — made up of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP) and Action Alliance (AA) — will collectively decide on one governorship candidate at the appropriate time.
He stressed that no final decision has been made on who will fly the coalition’s flag, adding that the only agreement reached so far is to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Wike also cautioned aspirants against celebrating prematurely, warning that such actions could create the wrong impression and fuel unnecessary speculation. He urged all coalition candidates to continue engaging with grassroots supporters while awaiting the coalition’s final decision.
The former Rivers governor maintained that every candidate within the alliance is capable of leading the state, noting that the coalition’s primary goal is to promote unity, stability and development in Rivers.
Wike further accused some activists, commentators and media organisations of benefiting from the political tensions that have long plagued the state, saying the Rainbow Coalition was formed to bring an end to such divisions.
He also took aim at smaller political parties, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC), arguing that political rhetoric and defections cannot replace the strong electoral structures needed to win elections. According to him, only the PDP, APC and LP have consistently demonstrated the capacity to compete effectively in major elections across Nigeria.
