Tired of looking over your shoulder in a Keke Napep? Residents in Jos North say phone snatching has become relentless and they are demanding real, lawful solutions.
Phone snatching in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, is getting out of hand and residents are increasingly worried about the growing insecurity.
CBI-News Correspondent Abideen Muhammad spoke to locals in Jos, who shared troubling experiences with phone theft.
Frank Charles recounted how he fell victim to phone snatchers. Ambassador Ikekhuamhen described how two men allegedly grabbed her sister’s phone and forced her out of a commercial tricycle, known locally as Keke Napep.
The methods seem to be getting more calculated. Isma’il Musa explained how his girlfriend was told to adjust the carpet inside a Keke. Shortly after, she realised her phone was missing. The riders said they were heading to Katako instead of her stop at Anguwan Rogo, and dropped her off along the way.
“I have not experienced such an incident personally, but my girlfriend’s phone was snatched after she boarded a commercial tricycle (Keke Napep). She was asked to shift her leg to adjust the carpet. She told them she was going to Anguwan Rogo, but they later informed her that they were heading to Katako and dropped her along the way.”
Emmanuel Rapheal shared how one of his relatives was allegedly manipulated into handing over her phone. The suspects told her to collect someone else’s phone, then disappeared with it.
Responding to the concerns, the Deputy Chairman of Jos North Local Government Council, Hon. Kabiru Garkuwa, acknowledged the challenge. He assured residents that the council is working closely with security agencies to address the menace.
Tensions recently boiled over at Zololo Junction in Jos North, where residents apprehended suspected phone snatchers and set their Keke Napep ablaze. The incident created serious tension in the area.
But residents like Emmanuel Rapheal and Ambassador Ikekhuamhen say jungle justice is morally wrong. They are calling on the government and security agencies to tackle the security challenges through lawful means.
Hon. Garkuwa noted that the local government is collaborating with security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other stakeholders to strengthen community security and curb criminal activities.
Residents of Jos North are calling for urgent and sustained action to tackle phone snatching and improve security across the area. While rejecting jungle justice, they want authorities to strengthen law enforcement and ensure offenders are brought to justice through legal channels.
