Remo Stars secures dramatic 2–1 victory over Nasarawa United...
Defending champions Remo Stars strengthened their survival hopes in the Nigeria Premier Football League with a dramatic 2–1 victory over Nasarawa United in Ikenne.
Michael Ibe emerged as the hero for the Sky Blue Stars, scoring in the 88th minute to seal the crucial win.
The result marked the team’s second victory in three matches under new head coach Usman Abdallah.
Both teams found it difficult to break the deadlock in the first half.
Remo Stars controlled possession for long spells but could not convert their dominance into goals.
CBI News reports that the breakthrough finally came in the 62nd minute when Stanley Joseph reacted quickest to a header from Ahmed Akinyele, firing home to give the hosts the lead.
Just as it appeared Remo Stars would secure a narrow victory, Nasarawa United stunned the home supporters with a late equaliser.
In the 83rd minute, Suleiman Dauda struck to level the score and put pressure on the defending champions.
However, the hosts refused to settle for a draw. Five minutes later, Ibe forced the ball into the net during a crowded goalmouth scramble from a corner kick, securing a dramatic late winner for Remo Stars.
Despite the important victory, Remo Stars remain in the relegation battle.
The champions occupy 19th position on the table with 33 points, just ahead of bottom side Kun Khalifat FC on 32 points.
Kwara United and Wikki Tourists are also fighting to avoid the drop with 33 and 35 points respectively.
Elsewhere, nine-time champions Enyimba FC ended a frustrating five-match winless run with a convincing 2–0 victory over Plateau United in Aba.
After a quiet opening half, Paul Odeh broke the deadlock in the 56th minute before Chinedu Ufere doubled the lead eight minutes later to secure all three points for Enyimba.
The result moved the Aba-based side to 15th place on the NPFL table with 36 points, just one point above the relegation zone.
Their previous league win came on February 1 when they defeated Bayelsa United 1–0.
In Ibadan, Shooting Stars SC claimed a thrilling 3–2 victory over Wikki Tourists. Tijani Al-Ameen scored the decisive goal in the 88th minute to seal the win.
Sadiq Ibrahim opened the scoring for the hosts in the 16th minute, but Abba Musa equalised for the visitors in the 35th minute.
Lucky Emmanuel restored Shooting Stars’ lead before halftime, while John Taiwo levelled again for Wikki Tourists to set up a tense finish before Al-Ameen struck late to secure the victory.
The win takes Shooting Stars to 47 points, level with Nasarawa United as the battle for continental qualification intensifies.
At the top of the table, league leaders Rivers United are scheduled to face Ikorodu City FC in Lagos at 4 p.m. on Monday, March 16.
The match follows a goalless draw between second-placed Enugu Rangers and Kwara United, a result that reduced the gap at the summit to just one point.
