Remi Tinubu Launches Nationwide Menstrual Hygiene Scheme

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, unveils ‘Flow with Confidence’ initiative to provide one-year sanitary pad supplies to 10,000 schoolgirls per state.

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has launched a nationwide menstrual hygiene intervention to support schoolgirls, particularly those in rural areas, with free sanitary products.

The initiative, tagged 'Flow with Confidence', was launched in Gombe State. In a statement by her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Busola Kukoyi, Mrs Tinubu said no girl should be deprived of education because she cannot afford menstrual products, describing such barriers as unacceptable in modern society.

She expressed concern that many girls still resort to unsafe alternatives or skip school entirely during their menstrual cycle. The intervention, introduced under the education framework of the Renewed Hope Initiative, aims to eliminate period-related absenteeism.

Under the scheme, all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory will receive 10,000 disposable sanitary packs each. Distribution will be handled through state First Ladies and Renewed Hope Initiative coordinators to ensure rural girls benefit directly.

In Gombe, Mrs Tinubu handed over 10,000 packs to the state’s First Lady, Asma’u Yahaya, for onward distribution to 10,000 schoolgirls, with each beneficiary to receive a one-year supply. She urged traditional rulers, religious leaders and community heads to ensure the products reach the intended recipients.

CBI News reports that millions of women and girls still lack access to menstrual products and adequate sanitation facilities. The First Lady said Nigeria must not allow poverty to deny young girls dignity or education.
