So, this was quite the moment in Abia State.

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has thrown her weight behind the iconic Akwete fabric, and she did it in style. According to cbinews.tv, she made the pledge during her maiden visit to the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Village in Ukwa East LGA of Abia State.

Her promise? If her husband, President Bola Tinubu, is re-elected in 2027, she will wear a full Akwete buba and wrapper for his second-term inauguration.

But it wasn't just talk. The First Lady announced a whopping N2 billion intervention to revive and promote the indigenous textile industry.

She described Akwete as unique, soft, breathable cotton that deserves to be celebrated nationally and globally, and she couldn't stop praising the women keeping this centuries-old tradition alive. For her, it's more than just fabric — it's heritage being passed from one generation to the next.

In her words, Nigerians really need to start embracing Akwete and other locally-made textiles. It's about pride, preserving our cultural identity, and more importantly, creating sustainable livelihoods for our rural artisans.

What made the visit even more special was how personal it was. Mrs Tinubu said she deliberately came without a prepared speech. No formalities. She just wanted to gist with the women, see their craft up close and appreciate their handwork.

She also had kind words for Abia State Governor Alex Otti, calling him "a very good man" for his support for the Akwete industry, and revealed she had earlier reached out to his wife, Mrs Priscilla Otti, to learn more about the weaving tradition before the visit finally happened.

Responding, Governor Otti said his administration has believed in the potential of Akwete since 2023, describing the fabric as unmatched in quality. He said the state is focused on bringing in technology and removing bottlenecks to help it grow.

He also used the opportunity to commend President Tinubu for his economic reforms, especially fuel subsidy removal and forex unification.

His wife, Mrs Priscilla Otti, described the visit as historic and lauded Senator Tinubu's Renewed Hope Initiative for its empowerment programmes for women, youths and vulnerable groups.

A big win for Made-in-Nigeria.
