Spurs just broke the bank and West Ham’s hearts. Mateus Fernandes is swapping east London for north London in a record £85m switch.
Spotted by cbinews.tv, Tottenham have landed Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham in a blockbuster move after the Hammers’ painful relegation from the Premier League.
The 21-year-old only arrived in London in 2025, but he’s already on the move again - and this one’s historic. Spurs have forked out a reported £85 million [$113.4 million], smashing their previous transfer record. For context, the old record was the £52m they dropped on Netherlands star Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig last August.
Fernandes comes in as Roberto De Zerbi tries to steady the ship at Spurs after they only just avoided the Championship drop last season. And it sounds like De Zerbi’s pitch sealed the deal.
What Fernandes said:
“Spurs is a massive club, and the head coach was a key part of why I have decided to join,” Fernandes told cbinews.tv.
“When we spoke, it was very special. We look at football in the same way – going onto the pitch as a strong team, with fight and energy, to try and win every game.”
De Zerbi’s take:
“I’ve admired Mateus for a long time because he combines quality on the ball with the intensity and intelligence that are so important in the way we want to play,” De Zerbi said.
“Despite his age, he already has good experience in the Premier League and has shown quality and consistency at this level. Mateus is comfortable under pressure, can progress the ball, works hard for the team and has the courage to make things happen in difficult moments. I believe this is the ideal environment for him to continue his development and I’m excited to start working with him.”
Fernandes’ journey so far:
- Came through Sporting Lisbon’s academy before moving to England with Southampton two years ago.
- Joined West Ham and racked up 5 goals in 72 Premier League appearances since his St Mary’s days.
- Made his Portugal senior debut in April, though he missed out on Roberto Martinez’s World Cup squad.
- BBC reports Man United were also sniffing around, but Spurs won the race.
Spurs’ busy summer:
Fernandes is confirmed signing number four for De Zerbi’s side. The club have also reportedly lined up Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali. Other new faces this window include goalkeeper Martin Dubravka and defenders Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Jan Paul van Hecke.
What’s next:
De Zerbi’s rebuilt Spurs kick off their Premier League campaign away at Brentford on 22 August. No pressure, lads.
