APC accuses Makinde of incitement, calls remarks threat to democracy...
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, over comments it described as inciting violence.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the party accused the governor of invoking the violent history of “Operation Wetie” during an opposition summit in Ibadan.
CBI News reports that the ruling party described Makinde’s remarks as reckless and a threat to national peace and security, noting that such statements were inappropriate for a sitting governor.
“The APC categorically condemns Governor Makinde’s incitement as reckless, and a clear and present threat to peace and national security,” the statement read.
The party added that as Chief Security Officer of his state, the governor should not reference episodes of political violence.
The APC urged security and intelligence agencies to take the matter seriously and act to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
“His statement risks fueling anarchy, murderous rage and widespread lawlessness capable of undermining national stability,” the party said.
It also warned that constitutional immunity does not shield public officials from accountability in matters affecting national security.
The party dismissed claims by opposition leaders about Nigeria drifting towards a one-party state, attributing such narratives to internal crises within opposition parties.
It accused leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, and African Democratic Congress of poor leadership, internal divisions, and disregard for due process.
The APC maintained that Nigeria’s democracy remains vibrant, citing the presence of multiple registered political parties participating in the electoral process.
The party also expressed confidence in its chances ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating that Nigerians would reject what it described as “fear mongering” by opposition figures.
The party reiterated its commitment under President Bola Tinubu to strengthening democratic institutions and delivering on its governance agenda.
It emphasised that it would continue to mobilise and prepare for the 2027 elections without interference from opposition groups.
