Carlos Queiroz appointed head coach of Ghana’s national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup...
The Ghana Football Association has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a statement, the GFA confirmed that the decision was taken by its Executive Council in consultation with key stakeholders, with the experienced Portuguese manager expected to begin work immediately as preparations intensify for the tournament scheduled to kick off on 11 June 2026.
“The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) working with all key stakeholders, has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars,” the statement read.
CBI News reports that Queiroz brings extensive World Cup experience, having managed at four editions of the tournament.
He guided South Africa to qualification for the 2002 World Cup, led Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and coached Iran in both the 2014 and 2018 tournaments.
Across those appearances, he recorded three wins, four draws, and six defeats in 13 matches.
“The former Real Madrid, Manchester United, Portugal, and Iran coach will lead Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States,” the statement added.
The GFA also highlighted his coaching experience across several continents, including stints in Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar, noting that his international background would be vital in strengthening Ghana’s preparations.
The 73-year-old replaces Otto Addo, who left the role on March 31 following a poor run of results, including friendly defeats to Germany and Austria.
Ghana also failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations despite having Premier League players such as Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo.
Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on 17 June 2026 in Toronto, before facing England and Croatia in their remaining group matches.
