Qatar Air Force reportedly Intercepts two Iranian Su-24 aircraft following retaliatory strikes...
Qatar has reportedly shot down two Iranian warplanes and suspended liquefied natural gas (LNG) production after drone strikes hit key energy facilities, amid escalating regional tensions.
The country’s defence ministry said its air force intercepted and downed two Sukhoi Su-24 bombers belonging to Iran, marking what appears to be the first direct aerial engagement between a Gulf state and Iranian aircraft since Tehran launched coordinated retaliatory attacks across the region.
“Qatar Emiri Air Force successfully shot down two (Su-24) aircraft coming from the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the ministry stated, without disclosing the fate of the pilots.
The escalation follows Iranian retaliatory strikes in response to joint US–Israeli airstrikes that reportedly targeted Iran’s leadership.
Since then, Iran has launched multiple waves of missiles and drones targeting ports, airports, residential areas, hotels and military installations across oil-producing Gulf states aligned with Washington.
The crisis intensified after drone strikes hit two facilities operated by QatarEnergy, forcing the suspension of LNG production.
CBI News reports that Qatar is among the world’s largest exporters of liquefied natural gas, and the shutdown has rattled global markets.
European gas prices surged by more than 50 percent, while oil prices climbed nearly nine percent amid concerns over prolonged supply disruptions.
