League delays game to give French champions rest between Liverpool quarter-final legs.
Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 match against Lens, originally set for April 11, has been postponed until May 13 to provide extra rest between the two legs of their Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool, the French league announced Thursday.
PSG will host Liverpool on April 8 and travel to Anfield for the return leg on April 14. The rescheduled Lens match now falls between the final two weekends of the French season.
The decision has sparked controversy, as Lens, currently second in Ligue 1 just one point behind PSG, had opposed the postponement. The club said it “responsibly takes note” of the league’s decision while reaffirming its determination to pursue sporting objectives.
The league also moved Strasbourg’s match against Brest to May 13 to allow rest ahead of their UEFA Conference League quarter-final against Mainz.
The LFP said the postponements aim to support French clubs in European competitions, boost the league’s coefficient, and help Ligue 1 maintain four Champions League spots.
