Protesters storms National Assembly demanding inclusion of real-time electronic transmission...
Protesters on Monday stormed the entrance of the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, demanding clarity and action on the ongoing controversy surrounding the electronic transmission of election results in Nigeria.
The demonstration comes after reports that the Senate had rejected the clause mandating electronic transmission of results in the proposed amendment to the 2022 Electoral Act.
Protesters insisted that lawmakers explicitly include the phrase “real-time electronic transmission” in the legislation to ensure transparency and credibility in elections.
Despite several clarifications from the Senate denying any complexity or inconsistency in their position, protesters remained firm, pushing for stronger guarantees in the bill.
At the time of reporting, a heavy security presence was deployed at the National Assembly, with personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) maintaining order.
CBI News reports that the protest aligns with warnings from stakeholders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which had threatened mass protests or election boycotts if the Senate’s stance on the electronic transmission clause undermined public confidence in the electoral process.
In a statement on Sunday, NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed concern that the Senate’s actions could erode trust in Nigeria’s democracy, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in election management.
