The protesters urged President Tinubu to immediately sack NAFDAC Director-General.....
Protesters under the banner of Concerned Citizens for Change on Tuesday stormed the headquarters of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Abuja, calling for the immediate removal of the agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye.
The demonstrators, led by Comrade Haruna Adamu, gathered at the agency’s headquarters to protest what they described as the “illegal and arbitrary” enforcement of a ban on sachet alcohol and 200ml PET bottled alcoholic drinks.
Addressing the media, during the protest, Adamu accused the NAFDAC leadership of acting in defiance of the National Alcohol Policy and what he claimed were directives restraining the agency from disrupting affected companies pending the outcome of a joint committee review.
He argued that the enforcement of the ban was inconsistent with the economic agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and could trigger job losses, business closures, and social unrest.
According to the protesters, the decision also contradicts a previous resolution of the House of Representatives, which they said had restrained NAFDAC from implementing the ban after consultations with stakeholders.
The group maintained that sachet and small PET alcohol products were designed to serve low-income adult consumers and should not be prohibited, adding that smaller portions could help reduce abuse associated with larger containers.
They urged President Tinubu to immediately sack the NAFDAC Director-General, insisting that her continued stay in office was no longer in the public interest.
