It got messy fast, but Day Two of US-Iran talks might just have salvaged things — even with Trump lobbing verbal grenades from afar.
Talks between the US and Iran rolled into a second day on Monday, according to cbinews.tv, as both sides tried to lock in a permanent end to the conflict after a seriously shaky kick-off, according to cbinews.tv.
Qatar and Pakistan, who are mediating, said there was “encouraging progress” during the first round. The big takeaways? The US and Iran agreed to set up a “de-confliction cell” to deal with the fighting in Lebanon. There was also movement on keeping the Strait of Hormuz open — that crucial waterway for global oil — and on holding the ceasefire in southern Lebanon together.
One senior US diplomat, speaking anonymously to reporters late Sunday, said they’d made headway on multiple fronts, including “mechanisms” to keep things calm.
But let’s be honest — Day One was rocky. The talks, held at a Swiss mountain resort near Lake Lucerne with Qatari and Pakistani officials in the room, got jolted by comments from US President Donald Trump. Firing off remarks from thousands of miles away, Trump managed to offend the Iranian side pretty quickly.
Iranian state media reported the talks actually paused after what they called an “insulting message by the U.S. President.” The Iranian delegation then met with Qatari mediators and left the venue, state media said. However, the US diplomat insisted the Iranians were still on site and negotiations were ongoing.
Tensions flared when Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian vowed Iran would “never back down from the right to enrich uranium,” per state media. Trump hit back in a phone interview with Fox News, saying Pezeshkian should “watch what he says” and even threatened to “take over Iran.
He didn’t stop there. As negotiators were working, Trump posted on social media: *“Iran must immediately stop their highly paid PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble. If they don’t, we’ll hit Iran very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder!!!”*
So — tense start, some progress, and plenty of drama still to come.
