The Pope’s remarks come amid renewed security concerns in Nigeria after a series of attacks reportedly left several persons dead.
Pope Leo XIV has expressed deep sorrow over recent violent attacks in parts of Nigeria, urging authorities to intensify efforts to protect lives and ensure the safety of citizens.
The Pontiff, born Robert Prevost, made the call in a post on his official X handle on Sunday, following reports of deadly attacks in Kwara, Katsina and Benue states.
“It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria leading to a heavy loss of life.
“I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism. I likewise hope that the competent authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen,” the Pope said.
The Pope’s remarks come amid renewed security concerns in Nigeria after a series of attacks reportedly left several persons dead, with homes destroyed and residents displaced in affected communities.
In Kwara State, gunmen were reported to have attacked Woro village shortly after military operations were conducted in the area against suspected terrorist elements.
Reports indicated that shops were set ablaze during the attack, while the residence of a traditional ruler was also torched, forcing residents to flee for safety.
In Katsina State, more than 20 persons were reportedly killed in an attack on Doma community in Tafoki Ward, Faskari Local Government Area, by suspected bandits.
Residents said the attackers arrived in large numbers, opened fire indiscriminately and fled the area after the assault.
Meanwhile, in Benue State, security operatives repelled an attack by suspected bandits on Anwase village in Kwande Local Government Area.
CBI News reports that the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the incident, saying security forces responded promptly and no casualties were recorded, although several houses were destroyed.
The Pope’s message underscores growing international concern over Nigeria’s security challenges and the need for sustained efforts to protect vulnerable communities.
