From terrorism to cybercrime and human trafficking, security threats in West Africa are growing fast and according to the Nigeria Police and youth leaders, no country can tackle them alone anymore.
The Nigeria Police Force, FCT Command, is calling for stronger teamwork among West African countries to tackle the growing wave of insecurity across the region, cbinews.tv reports.
Speaking at a summit organised by the West Africa Youth Parliament (WAYP) in Abuja, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Sanusi represented by ACP Umar Yakubu said crimes like terrorism, arms smuggling, cybercrime, and human trafficking have become major threats that require collective action.
According to ACP Yakubu, West African nations need to stop working in isolation and start sharing intelligence more effectively if they truly want to stay ahead of criminal networks operating across borders.
He also stressed the importance of joint border patrols and investing in modern technology such as surveillance systems and artificial intelligence to improve security operations.
But beyond policing and technology, the summit also focused heavily on the role young people can play in building a more peaceful region.
The newly inducted matron of the West Africa Youth Parliament, Mrs Morenike Henry, urged governments, institutions, and community leaders to work together to support youth development and unity.
She noted that many of the social problems fueling insecurity including unemployment, poverty, and lack of opportunities directly affect young people, making youth empowerment a key part of solving the region’s challenges.
Also speaking at the event, Regional Speaker of the West Africa Youth Parliament, Amb. Olasukanmi Kolawole, encouraged young Africans to become active promoters of peace, unity, and sustainable development.
He called on youths across the region to rise above division and contribute positively to nation-building and regional stability.
The summit brought together youth leaders, security experts, and stakeholders from across West Africa to discuss practical solutions to insecurity and strengthen regional cooperation.
