Seven suspects arrested, one locally made pistol with two Live Cartridges recovered....
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, led a joint team of operatives and tactical squads to clear a blockade and reopen the Lagos-Badagry Expressway at the Otto-Ijanikin axis following a communal clash.
The expressway, which had been shut for several hours after fighting between youths from Ijanikin and Otto communities, was reopened to traffic at about 0900 hours on Saturday. Normalcy has since been restored, with residents resuming lawful activities, police said.
During the clash, a man identified as Akinyemi Omo Akin was suspected to have been shot and later died in the hospital.
Jimoh ordered a full-scale investigation to be led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti. He said a large deployment of police personnel remained in the area to maintain peace and prevent further violence.
Police said preliminary findings indicated the deceased was not killed by a stray bullet from officers, describing such claims as incorrect. Authorities said they had received reports before arriving at the scene that both groups had brought in suspected cultists who engaged in a gun duel, during which the victim was believed to have been shot.
Seven suspects from both sides have been arrested and are in custody, police said, adding that they had made voluntary statements detailing their alleged roles in the clash.
Officers recovered one locally made pistol and two live cartridges from one of the suspects. Tactical squads and anti-riot police combed surrounding communities and bushes to apprehend fleeing suspects.
The Lagos State Police Command warned that it would not tolerate acts capable of breaching public peace and said those arrested would face the full weight of the law.
Police urged parents and guardians to caution their children against involvement in violence and encouraged residents to report suspicious activities through designated emergency lines.
