Police arrest suspect, others flee..
The police command in Oyo State has foiled an armed robbery operation on the Ogbomoso-Ilorin Expressway and arrested a suspect, a police spokesperson said on Monday.
Police said a joint patrol team comprising police operatives and local vigilantes intercepted the armed robbers at Egbeda village near Ogbomoso.
DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the command’s spokesperson, said in a statement in Ibadan that the suspected robbers had blocked the highway and stopped a tanker loaded with diesel driven by Surajudeen Sulaiman, forcefully dispossessing him and his motor boys of their belongings.
He said a gun duel later ensued between the fleeing hoodlums and the police patrol team, leading to the arrest of one of the suspects, aged 32.
Other members of the gang escaped into the bush with bullet wounds, Olayinka said.
Police and vigilante operatives have launched intensive bush combing and a manhunt for the fleeing suspects.
The spokesperson said the operation underscored the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property on major highways in Oyo State.
Oyo State Commissioner of Police Femi Haruna commended the bravery and swift response of the operatives and local security partners involved in the operation.
He also thanked Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu for his guidance and support in strengthening highway and community policing across the country.
