Over one million children reached - and Plateau State isn't slowing down. The state is gearing up for round three of its life-saving malaria prevention drive.

Big news from Plateau State on the health front!

The government has just wrapped up its review of the second cycle of the 2026 Seasonal Malaria Chemo-Prevention, or SMC, campaign and all eyes are now on the third round which kicked off on 6th August.

So, what went down? Stakeholders gathered in Jos - we're talking Roll Back Malaria managers from all 17 local government areas, state supervisors, folks from the Malaria Consortium, and programme officers - to look at what worked, what didn't, and how to make the next round even better.

Speaking at the meeting, the State Coordinator of Malaria Prevention, Kizito Ndak, said the whole point was to learn from cycle two and level up.

He put it quite simply: “Today’s programme is for us to review what happened in the implementation of cycle two before we go into cycle three, which begins on the 6th of August. We want to identify the challenges, how we mitigated them, and the lessons learned so that we can sustain the success story.”

And what a success story it is. The state reached well over one million children in the second cycle alone, and Ndak is confident they’ll not just match that number but beat it in cycle three and beyond.

The meeting also focused on the nitty-gritty - better coordination, tighter supervision and stronger community mobilisation to make sure every eligible child under five gets the preventive medicines they need during this peak malaria season.

It’s one of Plateau’s most crucial public health interventions, and health authorities say it will only work with sustained teamwork between government, partners and communities to bring malaria-related illnesses and deaths down.
