A young graduate full of promise is gone, and the Plateau State Government says enough is enough, jungle justice has no place in our society.
This is such a heartbreaking one.
The Plateau State Government has come out to strongly condemn the brutal mob killing of Ibrahim Mbaya, a graduate of the University of Jos, who was reportedly attacked by a mob in Jos over an allegation of a missing mobile phone.
According to a statement released on Friday by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, the government received the news with profound shock and deep sorrow.
In very clear terms, the government described the act as barbaric and completely unacceptable in a civilised, democratic and law-abiding society.
The statement stressed that the sanctity of human life is sacred and no individual or group, under any circumstance, has the right to take the law into their own hands.
What makes it even more painful is that a young life was cut short based on what is still an unverified accusation, while investigations are still ongoing.
On behalf of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, the government has extended its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the late Ibrahim Mbaya, as well as to the management, staff and students of the University of Jos and the government and people of Borno State.
The government also expressed confidence in the Nigeria Police Force and has urged security agencies to carry out a thorough, impartial and swift investigation. It insisted that anyone found to have participated in, facilitated or aided the crime must be identified and brought to justice.
And to all residents, the message was clear: say no to mob action. If you suspect someone of any offence, hand them over to law enforcement for proper investigation and prosecution. As the statement put it, no grievance, suspicion or allegation justifies the unlawful taking of human life.
Governor Mutfwang’s administration says it remains fully committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights and dignity of every citizen.
