A Fulani socio-cultural association has condemned Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s controversial shoot-on-sight directive against farmland destruction, warning that the order could worsen insecurity and deepen ethnic tensions in the state.
The Kautal Pulaaku Fulbe Association has criticised the directive issued by Caleb Mutfwang ordering security agencies to shoot on sight anyone caught destroying farmlands across Plateau State.
CBINews reports that the Governor gave the directive during a security meeting on Tuesday, instructing security operatives to deal decisively with criminal elements accused of invading farming communities, killing residents, and destroying their livelihoods.
Reacting in a statement issued on Wednesday, the National President of the association, Muh’d Hussaini Buzaye, described the order as extreme and capable of escalating insecurity in the state if not immediately reversed.
Buzaye argued that the directive specifically targets alleged farmland destroyers while failing to address attacks on herders, cattle rustling, and the poisoning of livestock allegedly affecting Fulani communities.
He stated that the silence on activities of armed groups attacking herders raises concerns that the Plateau State Government is not giving equal attention to the safety and protection of Fulani people living in the state.
The association urged Governor Mutfwang to withdraw the order and ensure that all security measures are implemented fairly, with equal treatment for all ethnic and community groups without discrimination.
According to the group, any strict action taken against destruction of farmlands should also apply to crimes such as cattle rustling, unlawful road blockades, attacks on innocent citizens, destruction of military checkpoints, and other violent acts threatening peace and stability in Plateau State.
The Fulani association further lamented the continued loss of lives and property among its members, alleging that many herders have been attacked and killed while carrying out their daily activities, while livestock theft and destruction remain persistent security challenges in the region.
