Ex-SDP Presidential Candidate Adebayo made the call following recent attacks in Plateau....
Former Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo on Monday called for a more responsive, community-driven security strategy following recent attacks in Angwan Rukuba, Plateau State.
Adebayo made the call during a condolence visit to the affected community, where he met with families displaced by the violence, describing the incident as a stark reminder of Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.
“Our brothers and sisters who are now fleeing are sacrificial lambs for those who want to take away peace,” he said.
He urged residents not to lose hope, adding that justice would ultimately prevail despite perceived shortcomings in government response.
“There is God. God is always responsible, even if the government is not responsible,” he said.
Adebayo described Plateau as central to Nigeria’s unity and heritage, assuring residents they would not be forced off their ancestral land despite the attacks.
“The people of this community are saddened and battered, but they will not leave this land,” he said.
He condemned the violence and called on authorities to demonstrate empathy and urgency in responding to such incidents.
“When such a lightning happens, it is the best time for government to show empathy and responsibility, comfort families, and prioritise victims,” he said.
Adebayo stressed the need to strengthen law enforcement through improved intelligence, logistics and collaboration with local communities.
“Government must strengthen our law enforcement, give them the resources they need, and merge them with the community to form a composite security network,” he said.
He added that perpetrators would be brought to justice and victims supported.
“Killing Nigerians by anybody, anywhere, cannot go unpunished,” he said, warning against politicising the attacks.
Adebayo also urged closer cooperation between Plateau authorities and the federal government to improve security in the Middle Belt region, which he described as critical to national cohesion.
Responding, the District Head of Angwan Rukuba, Haruna Bala, lamented inadequate security presence, saying attackers operated without resistance.
“There were no police around for any emergency. What happened was that they came, did what they wanted to do, and left without anybody stopping them,” Bala said.
He appealed for increased manpower, equipment and an upgrade of local police facilities to prevent future attacks.
Bala described the community as ethnically diverse and economically active, stressing that improved security was essential to sustain peaceful coexistence and commerce.
