Quickfire second half goals secure historic return to global tournament in Brazil.
The Philippines booked their place at next year’s Women’s World Cup in Brazil after scoring twice in five minutes to defeat Uzbekistan 2 0 in the Women’s Asian Cup playoffs on Thursday.
Angela Beard opened the scoring with a volley in the 47th minute on the Gold Coast in Australia, before Jaclyn Sawicki sealed the win with a header shortly after, ensuring the Philippines qualified for the global tournament for only the second time.
Australia, China, Japan and South Korea had already secured their spots in Brazil by reaching the semi finals of the Asian Cup.
One remaining place will be decided later on Thursday when North Korea face Taiwan in the other playoff between the losing quarter finalists.
Uzbekistan, who have never featured at a World Cup, still have a final chance to qualify through the inter confederation playoffs, where two additional spots are available.
Ranked 40th in the world, the Philippines have shown strong progress in recent years under Australian coach Mark Torcaso, including winning gold at the Southeast Asian Games last year.
The team made their World Cup debut in 2023 when the tournament was co hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
Under former coach Alen Stajcic, they recorded one win and two losses, finishing at the bottom of their group.
Australia and Japan will meet in the Asian Cup final on Saturday.
