Obi urges Super Eagles to stay confident and fight for the third-place medal...
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has praised the Super Eagles of Nigeria for their courage, resilience, and fighting spirit following their narrow defeat to Morocco in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In a statement shared via his 𝕏 account, Obi commended the Nigerian players for standing strong against all odds and battling until the final whistle, despite the painful outcome.
He noted that the Super Eagles played with pride and determination, urging them to remain confident as they still have an opportunity to finish the tournament with a third-place medal.
“Dearest gallant Super Eagles, it was a battle well fought and heads were not bowed.
“Thank you for a beautiful 120 minutes of incredible play. You showed your strength and prowess against all odds.
“The journey is not over. You have made the nation proud. Keep your heads high, the Eagle never stops soaring.
“There is another stage, let’s go get that medal.
“You have done well.-PO,” Obi wrote.
CBI News reports that Morocco secured a place in the final of the AFCON 2025 after edging Nigeria 4-2 on penalties following a tense 0-0 draw that extended into extra time.
The semi-final encounter, officiated by Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea, was marked by tactical discipline and defensive solidity, with both teams cancelling each other out over 120 minutes of intense football.
Nigeria, led by the attacking duo of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, enjoyed periods of possession and attacking intent but struggled to break down a compact and well-organised Moroccan defence. Despite their efforts, clear-cut chances were limited.
Morocco, under the leadership of captain Achraf Hakimi, appeared more threatening in open play.
Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali produced several crucial saves, notably denying efforts from Noussair Mazraoui and Abde Ezzalzouli.
At the other end, Moroccan goalkeeper Bono remained alert, keeping out Lookman’s first-half attempt to ensure the deadlock remained unbroken.
Extra time followed a similar pattern, with both teams making substitutions aimed at injecting fresh energy.
Osimhen was eventually withdrawn late in the game and replaced by Paul Onuachu, but fatigue took its toll, and goal-scoring opportunities remained scarce.
The penalty shoot-out ultimately decided the contest.
Morocco converted their kicks through Nabil El Aynaoui, Eliesse Ben Seghir, Achraf Hakimi and Youssef En Nesyri.
Nigeria stayed in contention with successful penalties from Onuachu and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, but missed attempts by Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi proved costly.
Hakimi’s composed finish and En Nesyri’s decisive strike sealed a hard-fought victory for the Atlas Lions, bringing Nigeria’s AFCON campaign to a heartbreaking end after a night defined by fine margins and sustained tension.
Morocco will now face Senegal in the AFCON 2025 final scheduled for 8 p.m. on Sunday, January 18.
Meanwhile, the Super Eagles will turn their attention to the third-place match against Egypt, set for 5 p.m. on Saturday, January 17.
