In a dramatic political move that could reshape Nigeria’s 2027 race, Peter Obi has announced his exit from the ADC, blaming deepening internal crises and a toxic political environment.
CBI News reports that former Anambra State governor and presidential hopeful Peter Obi has officially announced his decision to leave the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a detailed statement shared on his X account, Obi cited worsening internal divisions, legal battles, and external interference within the party as key reasons for his departure.
Obi described Nigeria’s political environment as increasingly hostile, marked by intimidation, insecurity, and persistent scrutiny, noting that systems meant to protect citizens often work against them.
He clarified that his exit was not driven by personal conflicts with party leaders, including David Mark and Atiku Abubakar, both of whom he said he continues to respect.
“My decision to leave the ADC is not because any leader treated me badly… but due to internal crises, endless court cases, and divisions distracting from real national issues,” Obi stated.
The former Labour Party candidate warned that the same destabilising forces he experienced previously appear to be resurfacing within the ADC, hindering genuine political progress.
Obi also lamented a broader societal challenge where integrity, humility, and accountability are often misunderstood as weakness, adding that sincere efforts at nation-building are increasingly undermined by suspicion and exclusion.
Despite stepping away from the party, he reaffirmed his commitment to Nigeria’s development, stressing that his focus remains on tackling insecurity, poverty, and displacement — not merely holding political office.
His exit follows growing speculation about a possible alignment with the National Democratic Congress, although Obi did not confirm his next political destination.
Meanwhile, Rabiu Kwankwaso has stated that consultations are still ongoing, with no final decision reached regarding his own political future.
