When a former presidential candidate tips his hat to a former Head of State, you know it’s a big deal. And that’s exactly what happened as Peter Obi celebrated General Abdulsalami Abubakar’s 84th birthday.
As reported by cbinews.tv, Peter Obi had some warm words for former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, as he turned 84.
The Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) didn’t hold back, calling Abdulsalami “a statesman of uncommon courage, patriotism and selflessness”. And honestly, it’s easy to see why.
Speaking on Saturday during the General’s 84th birthday celebration and the public presentation of books chronicling his life and service, Obi said Abdulsalami holds “a unique place in our national history.”
Why? Because at a really dicey moment for Nigeria, Abdulsalami stepped up. He guided the country through a peaceful handover to democratic rule — no small feat. As Obi put it, “His actions helped lay the foundation for the democratic dispensation that Nigeria continues to build upon today.”
Obi also dropped a reminder we could all use: “True leadership is measured not by the accumulation of power, but by the positive impact one leaves on people and institutions.” He praised Abdulsalami’s life as proof that serving the nation should always be about responsibility and the common good.
He wrapped up with prayers, saying: “May Almighty God continue to grant him good health, wisdom and strength to keep serving humanity and our nation.”
Classic Obi — closing with *“Thank you, and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”*
