Jeri accused of influence peddling and illegal use of resources, unofficial meetings with Chinese businessman Zhihua Yang...
Crowds rallied against Peru's interim president Jose Jeri outside the legislative headquarters of Congress after he was removed from office just four months after taking power.
People celebrated with placards and even cardboard coffins, while they chanted on Tuesday February 17, 2026.
"Now that we have brought down [from the presidency] [Jose] Jeri, I feel happy, content in a way, that this government is falling. Jeri has fallen, Dina Boluarte has fallen. Today we are seeking justice because this government does not represent the 34 million Peruvians who are now in the streets fighting against a criminal group, against a terrorist group that today wants to continue governing," said Jaqueline Merino.
Parliament backed the removal by 75 votes in favour, 24 against and 3 abstentions. The country already seen eight presidents' rotation in the past ten years.
"[I am] happy and content because justice has been done. That is what the Peruvian people expected. We wanted Jeri's removal because there were many acts of corruption taking place from inside the Government Palace with the backing of his ministers. We were already tired, we saw how a 'prostitution network' was governing the Government Palace," said Elizabeth Medina, another citizen..
