Peru’s Congress votes to remove interim president Jose Jeri...
Peru's congress has voted to remove interim president Jose Jeri from office, less than four months after he assumed leadership of the South American nation.
Lawmakers took the decision on Tuesday, making Jeri the seventh president Peru has had in the past decade, underscoring the country’s prolonged political instability.
His removal follows allegations related to improper appointments and suspected corrupt dealings.
CBI News reports that Jeri, 39, had been accused of facilitating the hiring of several women into government positions after meetings with him.
The claims first surfaced through a local investigative television programme.
Prosecutors later disclosed that up to nine women may have been involved in the appointments under review.
Authorities subsequently launched an investigation to determine whether Jeri used his office to influence job placements.
Beyond the hiring controversy, the former president is also being investigated over an alleged private meeting with a Chinese businessman believed to have business ties with the government.
The probe is examining claims of illegal support for private interests, though Jeri has denied any wrongdoing.
Jeri assumed office in October 2025 after Congress impeached his predecessor, Dina Boluarte, amid public outrage over corruption allegations and escalating violence linked to organised crime.
At the time of his appointment, Jeri was serving as head of Peru’s single-chamber parliament and was chosen to complete Boluarte’s term, which runs until July 2026.
Under the country’s constitution, he was barred from contesting the presidential election scheduled for April 12.
