He's back. Well, almost. Real Madrid are about to turn the clock back 13 years.
It's official. Florentino Perez isn't going anywhere.
The 79-year-old has just been re-elected as Real Madrid president by a huge margin, taking 65 per cent of the vote from around 100,000 socio members to see off 37-year-old challenger Enrique Riquelme. The club confirmed it late Sunday, and Perez wasted no time.
"We have won the elections and will continue working to keep winning titles," he said in his victory speech.
And the first big title he wants back? Jose Mourinho.
According to the result, Mourinho will be announced as Real's new manager as early as Monday. It's a proper full-circle moment. Madrid are reportedly paying his current club Benfica a €15 million release fee to get him out of Lisbon, and Perez is already talking him up.
"We will continue to take pride in the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, the best stadium in the world," Perez said. "Proud to have the best players in the world, proud to welcome back one of the best coaches in the world, a Madridista like Jose Mourinho."
Mourinho first rocked up at Madrid back in 2010 and stayed for three fiery seasons. He delivered one La Liga title, one Copa del Rey and a Spanish Super Cup during that unforgettable, and often chaotic, rivalry with Pep Guardiola's Barcelona.
It's a gamble, no doubt. Los Blancos have just finished the 2025/26 season without a major trophy, their second barren campaign in a row, and Mourinho remains as divisive as ever. But Perez clearly fancies a familiar face to steady the ship.
The writing was on the wall last week when Mourinho popped up in a video on Perez's official Instagram campaign account, wearing a Real shirt and simply saying: "Yes."
For what it's worth, beaten candidate Riquelme had promised something completely different, a blockbuster move for Manchester City and Norway striker Erling Haaland if he won.
Perez chose Mourinho instead. Madridismo, buckle up.
