Getting a call from someone who says they work for pensions and just needs your ATM card number to "fast-track" your money? Put the phone down, it's a scam.
The Military Pensions Board (MPB) has put out a fresh warning on its X handle on Friday, and it's aimed squarely at retirees and next of kin. The Board's Public Relations Officer, Squadron Leader Aliyu Mohammed, says they've had reports of fraudsters posing as officials or agents.
These people are promising to help you secure loans, speed up benefits, or sort out financial services, but the price is your private data.
What are they asking for?
Bank Verification Number (BVN)
National Identification Number (NIN)
Bank account details
ATM card information
Other confidential personal data
The Board is very clear: "Pensioners are hereby strongly advised not to disclose such information to any individual, group, or platform that is not officially authorised by the Military Pensions Board".
And just so there's no confusion, the MPB says it does not use third parties to collect your banking details for pensions, gratuities, loans or any other benefits. If anyone claims otherwise, they're not legit.
What to do:
Don't engage. Don't share. Don't click random WhatsApp links claiming to be the MPB.
Treat any unofficial request with caution.
Report it straight to the appropriate authorities through the Board's verified channels.
Stay sharp, look out for your mates who might not see these alerts, and always double-check before you hand over anything.
