Turaki-led PDP says it is awaiting the Supreme Court's ruling over party leadership crisis..
Nigeria’s opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said on Monday it is relying on a Supreme Court decision to resolve its internal leadership dispute, as tensions persist within the party.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the party said recent developments had raised concerns among members nationwide about the future of the party and the broader state of democracy in Nigeria.
The PDP said it had taken the matter to the Supreme Court for determination, describing the leadership tussle as one requiring judicial clarification, particularly on whether it falls within the scope of internal party affairs.
The party expressed optimism that the apex court would hear and adjudicate the matter expeditiously in the interest of democracy, following the filing and service of relevant appeals and applications on all parties involved.
Ememobong also criticised a recent gathering linked to supporters of former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike.
He described it as inconsistent with ongoing legal proceedings.
Ememobong alleged that the gathering contravened earlier court processes.
He said the validity of the disputed convention is now before the courts and would be pursued to conclusion by the party.
The PDP further said it had received multiple legal processes, including suits challenging the convention, adding that the matter remained sub judice.
It also referenced a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja that granted access to the party’s secretariat to individuals aligned with Wike, with security agencies directed to provide protection while they occupy the premises.
The party alleged that its challenges were part of broader political pressures, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to weaken opposition parties and push Nigeria towards a one-party system.
The PDP urged its members and Nigerians to remain hopeful, expressing confidence that the Supreme Court would uphold constitutional provisions and clarify the jurisdiction of courts in internal political party matters.
Meanwhile, a forum within the PDP has expressed support for the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The group, under the aegis of the PDP Aspirants Forum, stated this on Monday in Abuja, where it described Wike’s role as demonstrating “sound leadership acumen
"Our forum has observed with great relief the successful conduct of the National Convention of our great party last Sunday. We observe the cooperation shown by various leaders of the party towards ensuring that the convention is held without much ado,” the forum said.
The forum also appreciated stakeholders and members of the party across the federation.
It praised Wike as a leader with the capacity to unite the party and drive its revival.
