The convention is scheduled to hold on Sunday and Monday at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola International Stadium in Abuja...
A factional National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said its national convention would proceed as scheduled.
The faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, told a news conference that the convention remained a “defining moment” for the party’s democratic ideals and respect for due process.
Mohammed said the committee had made arrangements to ensure the exercise is credible, transparent and inclusive, reflecting the aspirations of party members.
“All necessary arrangements have been concluded to guarantee a smooth, peaceful and successful exercise,” he said.
He added that the convention complies with the party’s constitution and relevant laws, describing the PDP as a law-abiding institution committed to strengthening democracy in Nigeria.
Mohammed dismissed contrary reports as social media fabrications and urged delegates and stakeholders to remain orderly and peaceful.
He also called on members to stay calm amid attempts by some individuals to disrupt the process, adding that reconciliation efforts remain ongoing.
“The party has extended reconciliation efforts, and that door remains open, but we will not allow progress and stability to be undermined,” he said.
Mohammed commended Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike for supporting a conducive environment for the convention.
Responding to questions, he said the committee was unaware of any appeal or injunction from a rival faction led by Tanimu Turaki.
“If anything exists, it may well be on social media. We have not been served and cannot comment on unknown matters,” he said.
He distinguished the planned convention from a separate gathering in Ibadan, which he said lacked legal backing and had been restricted by a court.
“In our case, we have full backing of the courts, the law and party members,” he said.
Mohammed added that the NCWC enjoys broad support, including from former Senate President Bukola Saraki and Sule Lamido, as well as several lawmakers and stakeholders.
