PDP legal adviser Abubakar Issa criticises party leaders’ push to reconcile with Nyesom Wike.
The North Central Zonal Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party, Abubakar Issa, has criticised attempts by some party leaders to reconcile with the faction led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
CBI News reports that Issa made the remarks in an interview with Punch Newspapers, where he questioned the basis of the proposed reconciliation amid the lingering internal crisis within the party.
The PDP chieftain specifically expressed concern over moves by a group aligned with Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, to engage Wike and his supporters.
According to Issa, it is difficult to justify negotiations with Wike, who openly supported a presidential candidate from a rival party during the last general election.
He described Wike’s support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a betrayal of the PDP and insisted that the party cannot accept any arrangement that would involve working for the president in the next election.
Issa warned that attempts to reconcile with Wike without clearly addressing the issue could weaken the party’s internal discipline and damage its credibility.
“But from my own perspective, the question is: on what basis will the PDP meet with Wike? His position is very clear,” he said.
“What he is doing is even a crime against the party. You cannot remain a member of the PDP and openly campaign for another candidate. That is not done anywhere in the world.”
He further questioned the terms under which any reconciliation could take place, stressing that such a move could imply that PDP members are expected to support Tinubu.
“So, how do you now sit down to settle with such a person? On what terms? Does it mean that all of us in the PDP must now accept working for Tinubu? That is not possible.
“Within the next few days, we will see the position the party eventually adopts. But personally, I believe many party members will disagree with him. There is no way the PDP can work for the APC.”
