Gombe’s 2027 race just got interesting, ex-Communications Minister Isa Ali Pantami has switched sides and clinched the PDP ticket.
According to cbinews.tv, Professor Isa Ali Pantami, the immediate past Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, has picked up the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship ticket in Gombe State for the 2027 elections.
Pantami’s selection came through a voice affirmation at the party’s primary on Tuesday in Gombe. Party stakeholders gathered at the state capital venue and backed him as the flagbearer, with PDP Electoral Panel Chairman Gregory Yenlong declaring him the sole aspirant.
In a video shared online by Nigerian Affairs Journal, Yenlong told a crowd of supporters: “I declare Prof. Isa Aliu Pantami the duly elected and sole gubernatorial candidate of the PDP in the state.”
Speaking after his emergence, Pantami said he joined the race to serve the people of Gombe. He promised that, if elected in 2027, his administration would focus on equity, fairness and good governance.
“I contested for the seat to offer service to the people of the state. If I am elected, I promise that my administration will prioritise equity and good governance,” he said, as reported by cbinewstv.
Pantami is now set to face the All Progressives Congress candidate, Jamilu Gwamna, in the 2027 Gombe governorship election.
He had earlier withdrawn from the APC governorship primary last Tuesday, citing alleged breaches of the Electoral Act 2026 and irregularities in the process. He also opposed the consensus that produced Gwamna.
His move to PDP hasn’t been smooth sailing, though. Four PDP governorship aspirants — Alhaji Abdulkadir Hamma Saleh, Hon. Khamisu Ahmed Mailantarki, Hon. Usman Aliyu Garry and Mrs Monica Kaltho — raised objections after an emergency meeting on Sunday in Gombe.
In their communiqué, they argued that the law doesn’t allow a candidate to defect from one political party to another and contest the same election after votes had already been cast and counted in his favour in another party’s primaries. While they said they welcomed new members into the PDP, they strongly objected to bringing in someone who had already taken part in another party’s primaries, cbinewstv reports.
