Pack up or be packed out! Enugu State government has just handed roadside traders in Abakpa Nike seven days to vacate the roads, and one-way drivers are next on the hit list.

The Enugu State Ministry of Transport on Wednesday dropped a firm seven-day ultimatum — all roadside traders occupying the road corridors in the Abakpa Nike axis must vacate immediately.

And that’s not all. The Ministry is also coming hard for one-way drivers. According to the Commissioner for Transport, Obi Ozor, any vehicle caught driving against traffic will be impounded, and the driver made to pay a hefty fine.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner himself, he revealed that the Ministry has already kick-started a massive public sensitisation campaign. The exercise covered notorious traffic hotspots like Ukwu Aki, Texaco, Nowas, T-Junction and Nkwo Junction — areas where street trading and reckless driving have made free flow of traffic almost impossible.

During the campaign, drivers and keke riders were lectured on the dangers and legal penalties of one-way driving, while traders were served the seven-day quit notice to clear off roadways and walkways.

Mr Ozor was clear: for now, it’s just sensitisation. But once the grace period expires, it’s full enforcement and prosecution.

He appealed to motorists, traders and residents to cooperate with the state government to make Abakpa safer, cleaner and more accessible for everyone.

“One-way driving is a death trap. Keep to your lane and keep the roads clear,” the Commissioner cautioned.

This is not the first time Enugu State has taken this route. For years, Abakpa Nike — one of Enugu’s most densely populated suburbs with over 200,000 residents — has battled chronic congestion caused by roadside markets spilling onto major carriageways.

Under Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, the state has been pushing an aggressive urban renewal and decongestion drive. Last year, similar enforcement operations were carried out at Holy Ghost, Ogui Road and Abakpa Junction, where illegal structures were demolished to reclaim right-of-way.

Data from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) shows that driving against traffic remains one of the top three causes of fatal crashes in urban Nigeria, accounting for nearly 15% of city-centre accidents. In Enugu alone, the Ministry of Transport says it has recorded dozens of near-fatal incidents on the Abakpa-Nowas corridor in the last six months.

The message is simple: the era of trading on the road and driving against traffic in Enugu is over.
