Classrooms in Oyo are buzzing again — teachers have shelved their strike after weeks of tension, and the Federal Government says it’s a win for talk, not trouble.
Big relief for parents and pupils in Oyo: the teachers’ strike is over. The Federal Government welcomed the move on Thursday, calling it a clear victory for dialogue and a major step towards getting to learn back on track in public schools. cbinews.tv
According to a statement from Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, the breakthrough came after serious back-and-forth talks. The Federal Ministry, Oyo State Government, and the Nigeria Union of Teachers — from national right down to state level — all sat at the table. The result? Teachers are back in class across the state.
Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa said he was chuffed with the outcome. “I am glad to report today that the strike has been suspended. Teachers are now returning to school to educate their students,” he said. “This is the result of our collaboration and coordination with the leadership of the National Union of Teachers and the Government of Oyo State.”
He gave kudos to Governor Seyi Makinde for what he called “exemplary leadership” in handling the dispute through dialogue. Alausa also praised NUT National President Comrade Audu Titus Amba, South-West Zonal Chairman Comrade Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and the Oyo State chapter for helping resolve things.
The strike had shut down public primary and secondary schools for weeks. The NUT pulled teachers out over security fears after pupils and teachers were abducted in Oriire Local Government Area.
Alausa didn’t mince words on security either: “Our children will remain in school, and we will continue to educate them. We will not succumb to terror. This administration remains resolute in confronting insecurity with every available resource and ensuring that our schools continue to serve as safe places for teaching and learning.”
He also gave a shout-out to teachers nationwide for their grit and dedication. The Federal Ministry says it’ll keep working with states, unions, security agencies and other stakeholders to boost school safety and protect every child’s right to quality education — all in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
